He Keeps the Gate

The going out and the coming in — both ends of every road.

“The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Psalm 121:8 · King James Version, quoted verbatim

The Scene

Psalm 121 is a song of ascents, sung by pilgrims on the climb up to Jerusalem, where the road was long and the danger was real. It never promises an easy journey. It promises a keeper who does not sleep.

In the plate the figure stands in the gateway with his hands raised, lit by a cold line of light along the lintel, and the sleepers at his feet do not stir. The gate is the threshold every watchman knows. Whoever holds it holds the whole road.
